Here in Blackpool at the Conservative party conference all the talk is of an early election. We have had so much notice of Gordon Brown's 'surprise' election, the only question is does the clunking fist have the bottle to call it? If he does, we are ready.

After 10 years of Labour government so much is at stake. Labour's centrist approach has failed.

For all the spin of recent weeks, there has been little substance from Gordon Brown. The Labour legacy is as much his as Tony Blair's. After all as Chancellor he insisted on more Treasury control of all domestic public spending than any previous Chancellor.

It is Gordon Brown who should take responsibility for under funding our armed forces, for causing cuts to the NHS, for cutting Defra funds for flood defence and maintenance at Pirbright from where Foot & Mouth escaped. Labour has presided over a doubling of gun and knife crime, losing control over the scale of immigration, and increasing the tax burden on even the poorest taxpayers and pensioners while allowing many of their richest supporters to avoid paying fair tax in this country.

I expect a barn-storming performance from David Cameron on Wednesday. He has brought the party into the 21st Century, now he will set out clearly what the next Conservative government will do.

We want to give people more opportunity and more power over their lives; to make families stronger and society more responsible; and to make Britain safer and greener.

It is time for change, which only the Conservatives can deliver.
