Philip Dunne who raised the issue of soldiers suffering mental illness with the MoD said today: "For the first time the MoD has been persuaded to release figures on those suffering traumatic stress from serving in Iraq.

"These figures are alarming, suggesting almost 10% of the serving strength returns from Iraq with sufficient trauma to require treatment for mental health. In the US some 20% of forces personnel returned from Iraq require such treatment.

"This is worrying news for continued recruitment, retention and morale of our Armed Forces and in particular of our Reserve Forces where recruitment is declining."
