Philip Dunne MP who organised the inaugural meeting of the Ludlow Poultry & Bird Forum said today: "We had a well attended meeting, reflecting concern here in Shropshire about Avian Influenza. All sorts of bird keepers were represented, from those with a few hens in the backyard, to specialist raptor and rare breed collectors, game bird rearers right up to commercial poultry growers and hatchers. There were two very informative presentations about the importance of good husbandry practice and biosecurity measures to minimise the risks of infection."

The meeting was held on Friday 17th March at the Coor's Football Stadium in Ludlow, 70 people were present.

David Mills, Chairman of the NFU West Midlands Poultry Committee introduced leading poultry vet, Mike Clark, from the Minster Veterinary Practice near Hereford. Mr Clark gave a thorough presentation about the current state of Avian Influenza, explaining the method of transmission, clinical signs and most importantly risk assessment. He advised what steps keepers can take now to reduce their risks and put in place contingency plans should an outbreak occur. He recommended clear and practical measures to improve general management of a flock and reduce risks in the event of an outbreak in the area.

Val Fotheringham, Chief Microbiologist at Evans Vanodine, a Chemical Research and Manufacturing Company which sponsored the meeting, gave a detailed presentation on biosecurity, stressing how an effective disinfectant programme can limit exposure.

Mr Dunne added: "The Forum agreed to meet again on 19th May when a DEFRA official will be invited to speak."
