Local councillors Philip Dunne and Graeme Perks have called for a Ludlow member-sponsored debate on the proposed parking plans for Ludlow at next week's full South Shropshire District Council meeting on Thursday 31st August.

Cllr Dunne, also MP for Ludlow, said today: "The District Council set up a working group to consider parking and traffic management issues in Ludlow some four years ago. This group met only once under the present LibDem Administration. The new parking regime proposed by the County Council is due to come into effect in November this year without a proper discussion by the District Council, despite the fact that SSDC owns and operates most off-street parking in the town. We felt it was about time the District Council had a chance to raise any issues before the scheme was implemented.

"Ludlow Town Council has taken a pro-active role in seeking to improve traffic flow and parking in the town. I attended a committee meeting of the Town Council earlier this week to request any points they wanted raising at this debate. I received some useful feedback, in particular regarding the seemingly over-zealous road markings; potential problems for residents of the red zone being unable to park in adjacent blue zone in the same street; and for visitors staying at guest houses in the town not being provided for. I have raised this latter point with the County Council and hope they will consider a visitor permit scheme as applies in other towns with residents parking schemes.

"This debate is an opportunity for Ludlow residents and others likely to be affected by the proposed parking regime to let me and other District Councillors know of any specific problems they anticipate. The County Council has already responded to one issue which I and others raised recently and has changed aspects of the scheme. It may not be too late to make other practical suggestions. If there are issues people wish to raise, please contact me on 01584 872 187."
