In answer to a Parliamentary Question, the Government has now admitted the location of processing centres where all adults will have to travel at their own expense. Those from the Ludlow constituency will be forced into a 60 mile round trip to Shrewsbury.

For those in rural areas the travel costs will add to the overall cost of securing an ID card. These costs will hit the poorest and most vulnerable in society the hardest.

Mr Dunne said: "The thought of having to pay for an ID card is bad enough, but to be forced to go to a Government centre and be fingerprinted and interviewed is utter nonsense. Yet again this will cost more for those in rural areas.

This is why the Conservatives have promised to abolish this costly scheme. Not only is it a waste of money, it will not be fit for the purpose for which it is claimed to be so essential - defeating terrorism. These processing centres raise civil liberties issues. The ID card will hit the most vulnerable in our society, not the terrorists."
