Philip Dunne has secured a debate in Parliament next Wednesday on the structure of local government in Shropshire.Philip Dunne MP has secured a debate in Parliament next Wednesday on the structure of local government in Shropshire.

Mr Dunne has been on the committee reviewing the Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Bill which completed its committee stage through the House of Commons last week. This Bill provides for more areas to adopt unitary status.

Mr Dunne said today: "I tackled the Minister directly in committee on various aspects of the Bill as it affects Shropshire. But he has not been clear about how the Government will decide which areas will go forward for unitary status. He will be announcing his decision the following week, so I wanted to have a final chance to raise the critical issues before he makes his mind up.

People in Shropshire have made their views crystal clear that they do not want the upheaval of a neqw remote council. Unfortunately many of our councillors are ignoring the views of their electorate. There will be an opportunity in May for voters to elect representatives who listen and represent rather than dictate.

This debate will allow me to put the Government on notice about how strongly people in Shropshire feel about local government in our area. I hope he will listen carefully."

Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski has also applied to speak in the debate.

The debate takes place at 2.30pm next Wednesday 21st March 2007.
