Philip Dunne has been appointed to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). His appointment was approved by the House of Commons in the last week before the summer recess.

The PAC is the senior backbench scrutiny committee, with a remit to look into all aspects of public expenditure. It reviews reports of the National Audit Office and has the power to call in Ministers and officials across all Government departments to explain whether public money has been spent wisely.

Notable issues uncovered by the Public Accounts Committee this session have been the shambles within the Home Office's Immigration service, which led directly to the resignation of the last Home Secretary, and exposure of the much higher than previously admitted fraud and error within the tax credits regime which led to the Treasury's own accounts not being signed off last year.

Mr Dunne said: "I am delighted to have been asked to join this prestigious parliamentary committee. It has the widest powers of any committee to hold the Government to account. I look forward to playing my part, since it seems each week that passes uncovers another mess of this Government's making. I expect here will be plenty to keep us busy."
