He joined Shropshire Division Chief Superintendent Guy Rutter on operation Christmas Presence for pre-Xmas beat duty in Shrewsbury town centre.

While there he attended the scene shortly after a member of the public had jumped into the River Severn to pull a young man out of the river in near freezing conditions.

Mr Dunne said: "This was an extremely courageous rescue, after midnight, in water conditions which were dangerously cold and fast flowing. Luckily both men were safe. I hope the bravery of the rescuer will be recognised."

Mr Dunne had accompanied Sgt Simon Rees and his team to see what was happening in his District Council ward in Ludlow town centre before moving on to spend the night in Shrewsbury with Insp Alan Piggott on potentially one of the busiest nights of the year.

Mr Dunne added: "The cold spell may have dampened holiday spirits a bit, since thankfully it was a relatively quiet night after the pubs and clubs closed.

Shropshire police do a tremendous job, often with limited resources."

Ch Supt Rutter has been a pioneer of community policing and I am pleased to see the increased emphasis which West Mercia has placed on neighbourhood policing this year.

Mr Dunne is currently participating in the Police Parliamentary Scheme, spending 22 days in the year to 31st March 2007 with West Mercia observing all aspects of the force.
