Phones 4 Africa has been founded to encourage donation of old phones to help protect the environment and improve mobile communications in Africa.

At least 75% of the UK population own a mobile phone and every hour 1712 mobile phones are upgraded in the UK alone despite having a lifespan of 10 year's we usually keep them for 18 months on average. Africans do not have the same luxury.

Peter Gabriel, the former lead singer of Genesis, met Philip Dunne to help promote the campaign.

Peter Gabriel said: "Phones 4 Africa is a brilliant idea. With all the things to be pessimistic in the world, mobile phones are a great reason to be optimistic. Mobiles have been adopted faster in the developing world than in the developed world. They have the capability for improving lives."

Mr Dunne added: "I urge anyone who has an old, unwanted mobile phone to donate it to this worthwhile cause. If all mobile-users in the UK threw their old phones in the bin we'd be land filling £650,000 worth of silver a year, not to mention the toxic chemicals that would leak into the environment.

Better communication is one way in which we can help to try and tackle poverty. By giving African countries mobile phones we are also giving them a voice."

You can send your mobiles to the freepost address - FREEPOST Fonebak Vodafone Africa.
