Dunne campaigns against Recycling Centre closure proposals

Local MP, Philip Dunne, has expressed his concerns over plans by Shropshire Council which could potentially lead to partial or complete closure of one or both local recycling centres in South Shropshire.

Mr Dunne is calling on Shropshire Council to think again, and is seeking views of local residents to help build their campaign to keep both recycling centres open.

Shropshire Council currently operate through Veolia five recycling sites in the county, including at Bridgnorth and Craven Arms in the south of the county. Mr Dunne visited both the Bridgnorth and Craven Arms site last week. At Craven Arms he met local Shropshire Councillor David Evans and the Chair of Craven Arms Town Council, David Mills, to discuss the impact a potential closure would have on the community.

With few local sites to dispose of larger items of household recycling, there is widespread concern that closure might lead to an increase in fly-tipping across South Shropshire.

Mr Dunne is asking local residents to complete his survey at https://constituencysurvey.uk/recyclingcentres, to help him demonstrate to Shropshire Council the strength of local feeling. He also urged local residents to take part in Shropshire Council's consultation which closes on 20th May and is accessible here: https://www.shropshire.gov.uk/get-involved/garden-waste-and-household-recycling-centres-consultation/.

Mr Dunne said:

“I have real concerns about proposals to close household recycling centres in Shropshire. With only two sites in South Shropshire, any material reduction in service provision could lead to the horrible blight of fly-tipping and great cost and inconvenience to law-abiding local residents who want to do the right thing by taking their bulky or difficult to dispose of household items for recycling or safe disposal.

“Residents want to do their bit for the environment and dispose of household waste properly, but they need the right facilities to do so. I urge local residents to complete my survey, and help make the case for keeping these sites open.”
