Following the recent NICE decision not to prescribe three drugs (Aricept, Reminyl, Exelon) to patients with early stage dementia, Alzheimer's Society campaigners in Shropshire met local MP Philip Dunne today.

Gaenor Bolton, Shropshire Branch Chairman, Bill Young, West Midlands manager and local carer Gordon Yapp from Clun called on Mr Dunne today as part of their campaign to raise awareness of the problems NICE's decision will cause for many thousands of Alzheimer patients.

Mr Dunne gave his support saying: "I was impressed by the Alzheimer's Society arguments regarding the efficacy of these drugs for early stage dementia patients. With 6,000 dementia patients in Shropshire and an increasingly elderly population I am happy back their calls for the recent NICE decision to be reviewed. I understand two of the drugs companies concerned are considering a judicial challenge.

With Whitcliffe Ward in Ludlow closing this latest decision is another body blow for those concerned about mental health provision in Shropshire."
