Pork-barrel politics have been around for a long time. Before the American Civil War slaves were fed salt pork from huge barrels. Today our failing Labour government is increasingly seeking to buy votes by favouring areas with Labour MPs.

We have all been shocked by the revelation that community hospitals in Conservative or LibDem seats are seven times more likely to close than those with a Labour MP.

Post Offices in Conservative and LibDem seats are also under greater threat than in Labour constituencies.

Now the future of RAF Cosford may be compromised by Tony Blair's desperate search for votes.

He is poised to make a crucial decision about the future base for training our soldiers, sailors and airmen and women in mechanical engineering and other vital skills. This decision looks increasingly as if it will be made not on the grounds of military effectiveness and best value for the taxpayer, but for fear that Labour will lose marginal seats in Wales.

Blair is terrified of losing his powerbase in the Welsh Assembly. So he is scrabbling around in his Downing Street pork barrel in the hope of fattening up his wavering supporters.

RAF Cosford would be a clear winner if the decision were made on non-political grounds.

Cosford is ideally located as a training magnet for the whole country, with world class engineering skills, experienced staff and infrastructure in place.

It has an overwhelming competitive advantage over the St Athan site in Wales, with no such plus points.

If Blair rejects Cosford, he risks his lasting legacy being a pork-barrel politician.
