Dunne welcomes restoration project and heritage programme at Stottesdon Church

Philip Dunne MP today welcomed news that Stottesdon Parish Church, St Mary’s, has successfully bid for a £271,500 grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to deliver essential repairs to the 1,000-year-old building.

The funds, raised by National Lottery players, will be utilised for capital projects to restore the church building, including repairs to the roof, rainwater disposal system and stoneworks.

More sustainable heating and lighting systems will also be funded to transform the church and ensure a welcome reception for visitors and parishioners alike.

Next month will also see the launch of an engaging and thought-provoking programme of events to be called “Stottesdon Parish Church, Past, Present and Future”. The programme of activities will provide opportunities for residents and visitors to the church to learn more about St Mary’s and the parish whilst exploring the heritage and history of the building.

The heritage project will see local partners come together to deliver training and hands-on learning opportunities running into the New Year. Highlights include replica tile-making workshops, nature trails and tours while the building works progress, to showcase traditional crafts such as wood-work and masonry.

St Mary’s Church is a treasure trove of heritage, featuring unique examples of Saxon, Norman, Medieval and Victorian additions to a millennia-old place of worship.

South Shropshire MP, Philip Dunne said:

“St Mary’s Church has played a central role in local community life for over 1,000 years and has a rich local history, with a spectacular pre-Norman tympanum and stunning Victorian stained-glass windows.

“The extensive restoration project funded by National Lottery players will ensure that the Stottesdon Parish and wider community can continue to enjoy this beautiful heritage asset for years to come.”
