Dunne welcomes £300m winter sports survival package

Philip Dunne MP has welcomed a £300m package of funding for major spectator sports to protect their immediate futures over the winter.

The Sports Winter Survival Package will provide loans to support sports impacted by coronavirus, from national governing bodies down to clubs, seeing them through the most difficult period. This is an unprecedented package of support for the domestic sports sector.

Sports to benefit include rugby union, horse racing, women’s football and the lower tiers of the National League, rugby League, motorsport, tennis, netball, basketball, ice hockey, and badminton. The funding process will be overseen by an independent decision-making board and supported by Sport England.

Mr Dunne said: “This has been a very difficult year for competitive sport, whose funding model naturally relies on getting fans through the gate. So I am pleased the government has stepped in to offer immediate support, to help national bodies and clubs through the winter, so we all have sport to enjoy in future once COVID19 is behind us.”
