Dunne backs business energy support

The Government has today announced the Energy Bill Relief scheme to support business, charities and public sector organisations with the cost of rising energy bills.

The scheme will provide support to businesses, but also to all non-domestic energy customers, including hospitals, schools, faith buildings and community halls. Wholesale prices will be fixed at 21.1p per kWh for electricity and 7.5p per KWh for gas for six months from 1st October.

Commenting on today's announcement, MP for South Shropshire Philip Dunne said:

“I welcome this prompt action by the new Business Secretary to put in place practical help for businesses and non-domestic energy customers to manage the exceptional energy cost hikes they are facing this autumn.

“I have been in talks with some of the largest employers who are big energy users locally, as well as with individual small business owners. Many have shown me the scale of the quotes they have been receiving for renewal of their energy supply contracts in coming weeks - which were threatening the viability of their business.

“This is why the Government has had to act in these exceptional circumstances and has done so at great pace. Today's announcement of the maximum energy prices businesses will face this winter provides the clarity businesses have been clamouring for and will ensure that our local pubs, nurseries, schools and churches are able to stay open this winter. It applies to contracts taken out since 1st April 2022 and will be administered by Government discounts to energy suppliers to ease administration for businesses.

“I am not a natural supporter of government intervention on prices. But we have to recognise this is primarily the result of President Putin's war in Ukraine disrupting energy supplies. War in Europe requires wartime response when this threatens our livelihoods.”

The Government will publish a review after three months to inform decisions regarding future support after March 2023, when the Energy Bill Relief Scheme is likely to end.
