Philip Dunne MP has nominated the George & Dragon Inn in Much Wenlock for the Parliamentary Pub of the Year Award.
The Parliamentary Pub of the Year Award recognises pubs that are great at what they do, and can include the range of beer or food provided, the dedication to serving the local Community or a specialism in Music or Sports.
The George & Dragon had been a tenanted pub of Star but it closed following failure of a tenant, and the inability of the landlord to secure a new tenant willing to take it on.
Two local businessmen decided it was such an iconic meeting point at the heart of Much Wenlock that they were determined to restore its fortunes. They set up a partnership, negotiated a reduced rent and secured a better supply relationship with local breweries. They also refreshed the interior decoration with minimal refurbishment to open up interior spaces, introduced a cashless payment bar and food management system and within five months reopened, reemploying over 20 staff.
The George & Dragon recently won CAMRA Pub of the Season for Autumn 2019.
Mr Dunne said: “I am delighted to nominate the George & Dragon in Much Wenlock for Parliamentary Pub of the Year Award.
The pub is a real South Shropshire success story, and shows how great pubs in can thrive with the right community support. I wish them the best of luck against some stiff competition from across the country for this prestigious national award.”
Shropshire Councillor for Much Wenlock, David Turner, who encouraged Mr Dunne to nominate the local pub said: “The George & Dragon has long been popular watering hole locally. Its revival, with a great food offer, and a willingness to accommodate local groups from Young Farmers through to digital communication awareness sessions means it is a real community hub.”
