Ludlow MP trains as Community Defibrillator

Ludlow MP Philip Dunne last weekend joined local volunteers from Ludlow and Richard’s Castle to receive training in how to use a Community Defibrillator and administer Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Community Defibrillators are placed in public areas such as leisure centres, schools and shopping centres to allow trained volunteers and Community First Responders to attend to a cardiac arrest in the vital moments before an ambulance can arrive.

Mr Dunne said:
“I have long supported wider availability of Community Defibrillators across South Shropshire, since meeting Community First Responders from West Midlands Ambulance Service to discuss it a few years ago.

“I was pleased to able to join the group receiving CPR and defibrillator training in Ludlow last weekend.

“Access to defibrillators within a community can make the difference between life and death – chances of surviving a cardiac arrest diminish by ten percent every minute without treatment.

“I encourage Parish Councils to consider installing a Defibrillator, just as Richard's Castle is doing, and individuals to volunteer for free training that can help save lives within our local community.”

There are currently over 100 community defibrillators in Shropshire, including 4 being installed in Ludlow, and 14 in the Clun Valley area. Over 350 people have been trained in their use in Shropshire, with training sessions provided by Dawn Cunningham, WMAS coordinator, for new volunteers every few months.

The training was organised by Ludlow Town Councillor Priscilla Toop, a trained Community First Responder, who helps coordinate volunteers in Ludlow if a cardiac emergency occurs. Community First Responder Edmund Jones who coordinates the Clun Valley was also on hand. Training is provided free of charge by WMAS to those who volunteer to be available to respond to emergencies in the local area.

Anyone interested in becoming trained to use a Community Defibrillator should contact Priscilla Toop on 01584 875 064 or email
