Philip Dunne MP is reminding those eligible across South Shropshire to receive their free flu vaccination, as winter arrives.
Mr Dunne attended Westminster Flu Day, an annual event in the House of Commons, to learn more about the importance of vaccination to support good health at all stages of life, and how the NHS locally is promoting increased coverage rates in Shropshire.
Only clean water rivals vaccines at reducing infectious diseases and deaths and vaccination supports good health at all stages of life.
Mr Dunne said:
“In the UK, immunisation programmes have meant that diseases that our grandparents used to fear, and which were once the norm, such as Polio, are now very rare and in some cases eliminated. Staying up-to-date with your vaccinations is really important and can help protect yourself and those around you against infectious diseases like the flu.
We have a significant elderly population in Shropshire who are eligible for the flu vaccine, but only around 70% of those eligible take up the offer - and only around half of all at risk individuals under 65 years old take up the vaccination offer. This can cause real health issues, so I encourage everyone who qualifies for the vaccine to speak their GP and get immunised before the worst of the winter weather sets in.”
Westminster Flu Day is an annual Parliamentary event sponsored by the ABPI Vaccine Group in partnership with the British Lung Foundation, Carers Trust and Royal College of Nursing and with the support of the Department of Health and Social Care and Public Health England.
