South Shropshire MP Philip Dunne has welcomed announcement of 100 extra new officers for West Mercia’s policing area.
The move is part of West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion’s focus to place more resources into frontline policing. The announcement will take the number of officers in West Mercia to 2,030, with recruitment starting immediately.
The investment is possible thanks to improving back office efficiency, significant reserves held by West Mercia and flexibility offer to policing areas by the Home Office in the police precept.
Mr Dunne said: “This is welcome news for South Shropshire, and should help bolster the visibility of officers in our community. Making savings in back office functions to further invest in frontline community policing is the right approach, and I am pleased our Police and Crime Commissioner is seeking to use police funding as effectively as possible.”
