Historic Papal visit

20th September 2010

Last week's historic official state visit was the first from a Pope to our shores. Thousands turned out to see Pope Benedict XVI and millions watched the events he attended here.

It provided an opportunity to explore our shared interest in reducing poverty, campaigning against climate change and encouraging a more responsible society.

Of course, not everyone will agree with everything the Pope says. But that does not diminish the importance of this visit.

I was fortunate to be present in Westminster Hall, the oldest such building in Europe, built by William Rufus in the 11th century, when the Pope addressed both Houses of Parliament and other leaders of civil society. It was not lost on anyone present that it was the scene of the sentencing to death of Sir Thomas More, subsequently canonised as a saint by the Church for standing up for his faith.

He spoke with conviction about the need to respect faith when making decisions. It is important to recognise the values and traditions of the major faith groups in our society. Through their pastoral work they are responsible for doing more than any other group to help those most in need within our society and in other countries around the world.

While not a Roman Catholic myself, I am a practising Anglican and respect the sincerity of views held by those with faith. I seek to take these into account, in particular when confronted with moral and ethical issues before Parliament.

It is good for us all to be reminded that faith matters and should be respected, even if we do not agree with all its teachings.
