Bridgnorth Conservatives Launch Petition on the European Constitution

This weekend sees Bridgnorth Conservatives launching a petition for a referendum on the New European Constitution. Local Conservatives are calling for a referendum on whether Britain should sign up to the New European Constitution. Campaigners will be kick starting their campaign in Bridgnorth at a market stall on Saturday morning 11th October.

Cllr Philip Dunne, Conservative Parliamnetray Candidate for the Ludlow constituency, said today: "I urge people of all parties to join in signing this petition to put pressure on the Government to allow a referendum on the EU Constitution.

Tony Blair calls the proposed new EU Constitution a 'tidying-up exercise'. We believe this Constitution would fundamentally alter the relationship between the EU and its member states. The ability of national parliaments to overrule proposals from the unelected bureaucrats in Brussels would disappear over a whole raft of major policy areas such as home affairs, social policy and employment law.

This may seem an abstract idea but it is of real importance to the ability of the people to choose how they want to be governed and by whom. Both Labour and the Liberal Democrats want to give power away to Brussels. Only the Conservatives want to preserve Parliament's authority.

If Tony Blair is happy to let the people of Hartlepool have a referendum on whether to elect a monkey, why will he not let the people of Britain have a referendum on this new Constitution which will affect us all?"
